Organizing Your Pinterest Boards for a New Home Build

Why I Love Pinterest (And Wish I Had Thought of It)

I have a confession to make: I’m completely and utterly in love with Pinterest. If there was a way to marry a platform, Pinterest and I would be happily ever after by now. I often find myself wishing that I had been the genius who came up with the idea because it’s so much more than just a place to collect recipes and DIY projects. For me, Pinterest is my search engine, my idea vault, my creative playground. It’s where my visions come to life—one pin at a time.

When I first started using Pinterest, like most people, I was pinning recipes I’d never try and DIY projects I started and never finished. But as I dove deeper into the platform, I realized it had the potential to be so much more. Over the years, Pinterest has evolved into an indispensable tool in my life, especially now as I embark on one of the biggest projects I’ve ever tackled: building my forever home.

The Importance of Organizing from the Start

Now, here’s the thing about Pinterest: it can get overwhelming fast. Trust me, I’ve been there. You start with a few innocent pins, and before you know it, you’ve got 10,000 pins scattered across a hundred boards with no rhyme or reason. Sound familiar? That’s why I can’t stress enough how important it is to get organized right from the beginning, especially if you’re using Pinterest to plan something as massive as a home build.

When you’re embarking on a project as intricate and personal as building a home, your Pinterest boards need to be more than just a random collection of pretty pictures. They need to be thoughtfully organized, easy to navigate, and actionable. This isn’t just about creating a visual dream board—it’s about creating a roadmap that will guide you from the first blueprint to the final coat of paint.

Creating a Master Plan

The first step in organizing your Pinterest boards is to create a master board—think of it as the umbrella under which all your ideas will live. For me, it’s my “Home Dream Home” board. This is where I start, and from there, I break everything down into sub-boards for each area of my build, like “Kitchen Design,” “Exterior Ideas,” and “Outdoor Spaces.”

Within these sub-boards, I get even more specific by creating sections. For example, in my “Kitchen Design” board, I have sections for countertops, cabinetry, lighting, and appliances. This way, when it’s time to make decisions, I can easily find exactly what I need without scrolling through hundreds of pins.

Why Being Selective Matters

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of being selective with your pins. It’s easy to get carried away and pin everything that catches your eye, but this can lead to a cluttered and confusing board. Instead, I focus on pinning only what truly resonates with my vision. I also make a point to add notes to each pin, describing what I like about it, how it might fit into the bigger picture, or any potential modifications I’m considering.

Collaborating with Your Team

Another reason why Pinterest is a game-changer for home builds is its collaborative features. Whether you’re working with a designer, an architect, or in my case, my extremely talented partner Dale, sharing your boards can help everyone stay on the same page. Pinterest allows you to invite collaborators to your boards, so they can add their own pins, leave comments, and keep the creative juices flowing.

From Pinspiration to Reality

The beauty of Pinterest is that it bridges the gap between inspiration and action. Once you’ve organized your boards and refined your vision, it’s time to translate those ideas into real-life decisions. Whether it’s meeting with your contractor to discuss your pinned kitchen designs or sourcing materials based on your meticulously curated boards, Pinterest can help turn your dream home into a reality.

Final Thoughts

Pinterest may have started as a platform for collecting recipes and DIY projects, but it has evolved into so much more—especially for those of us embarking on the journey of building a home. By taking the time to organize your boards from the start, you’ll set yourself up for success and ensure that your vision remains clear, cohesive, and achievable.

So, if you’re about to dive into a new home build, or even if you’re just dreaming about one in the future, I encourage you to harness the power of Pinterest. Get organized, stay selective, and most importantly, have fun with it. After all, this is where your forever home begins.

I hope this guide helps you see Pinterest in a new light and inspires you to start organizing your boards for your next big project!
